Mim says Merry Christmas!
So ive only posted here once, and you may not remember me and my toy poodle Mim... but ill post anyway! Mim's had a double whammy this week, it was her 1st birthday on Monday, and then her first Christmas! Here are some pictures of her first Christmas! I am just so glad to have her, she is seriously the best thing that has happened to me :) Although in some of the pictures she looks a bit poopy because this morning, she ran out the front door and nearly got ran over :/ and I got scared, and growled at her. A couple pics and a ?
This is what happens when I let the boyfriend and dogs in the kitchen while baking. Poor dogs...haha. Pudges Dakota My Question: I just recently started giving 4 of my dogs fish oil capsules due to dry skin. They have some nasty, frequent gas now. Is this normal? |

Hey! I just adopted my first dog a month ago. I had some money saved, and one of the advantages of being out of work is you have a lot of time to train a new beagle. He's a rescue dog, about two years old. He was picked up as a stray and he knew no obedience commands when I took him home, but he has a lovely temperament aside from some minor mouthing and housebreaking issues, which I have every confidence of working through. However, I think I know why he was picked up as a stray -- he's a determined escape artist who will chew through any leash or collar you put on him. Since I brought him home a month ago, he's destroyed four leashes and a chest harness (about 100 dollars worth of equipment), jumped a five foot fence in my dog-owning Aunt's back yard, and bitten his way out of the longline we're using while we train him on the electric fence. Today, the first day I've let him off leash in our yard - and yes, I was with him - he charged through the Invisible Fence we've got installed (the expensive one with the guys who come do the training, not a Petco version), with electric collar on, right into the main road, a busy four-lane highway right next to our house. I nearly died of panic, it was just fucking awful, but thank goodness he didn't get hurt. Any tips for working with an escape artist dog? He's on a chain leash now that he can't bite through and a martingale collar; he chokes and wheezes in it, so I wanted to get him a harness - but he had his on for about an hour before it was in shreds. I'm not sure if I'll ever trust him in an electric fence now, but a real fence just isn't an option due to price. He's an active little guy, and he gets at least an hour of exercise a day on leash, more when the sidewalks aren't covered in snow, but he'd be a lot happier with a yard to run in. There are no dog parks within an hour's drive, and I want to give him some freedom - but how? |

War vets, shelter dogs, heal together
I found this article on MSN and it brought tears to my eyes. Happy tears. And yes it's related to bullies as the man who started all of this did so after adopting a pit bull named Cheyenne from an animal shelter and saw how much she helped him with his PTSD. Just a little more positive press for your Christmas Eve. Article here( Text behind the cut ) |

Doggie Guilt - how far should I let him go with his bone?
I'm still pretty new to the dog owning aspect as I haven't had a dog since 1987. Oscar is a stray pit bull I've taken in and his chewing is pretty much on par with standard pits as far as I can tell from research. The trouble is this: Last night I shelled out $10 for a nice beef smoked femur. I thought that'd be a nice gift. As always the warning label advises taking the bone away when it splinters. He has 2 smaller hollow bovine bones that have not splintered yet. He's already gnawed the nubs off the ends and at one point I heard a large Pop where he bit off a piece and he quickly ran and swallowed as I attempted to get it back. This is gnawing marks but it's already down 2 inches on the ends. Is this all right? I've taken the bone away and I feel like a heel for tossing it in the trash so soon. I'll get it back out and wash it off (outside trashcan that was emptied yesterday) if it's ok. I just don't know much about bones and dogs. Cats crack chicken bones long ways which causes splinters and I do snag those. Should Oscar keep his bone, or do I go brave the Xmas Eve shopping to get him a new one? (possibly rawhide this time or the wheat edible one)? |

It's me again...
We're visiting my aunt and paternal grandma today. My aunt has three dogs: Nissa (a mutt who looks like an ewok), Rosie (tiny tiny EVIL chihuahua) and Blacky (vicious mutt). Nissa and Rosie are females and Blacky is male. Blacky is always kept in away from visitors because he's so unfriendly. Nissa is very sweet but a bit snippy if you touch her arthritic rear end and is the alpha dog of the back. Rosie is a tiny, tiny chihuahua who growls at everyone but mostly because she's terrified. Because Jingles is in heat would Nissa and Rosie be on the offensive since she's a new dog to "their" home and she's in heat? All of my aunt's dog's are fixed so Blacky couldn't even get her pregnant if he tried but would he really? I hope someone has some experience with this because I'd like to prevent an all out pack attack on my dog. Current Mood: worried |

Lets Play Guess What Breed Mix My Dog Is!
Any ideas about what breed mix my dog Honey is? She is about eight months old and weighs about 28 lbs. She stopped growing when she was about five months old. The shelter we got her from told us she was a boxer/lab mix (she had floppy ears when we got her at about 12 weeks old), but I'm pretty sure they guessed wrong. She looks a little like a basenji and other people have told me so too, but she definitely barks. Maybe she's mixed with lab too? Who knows! ( More photos here ) |

Eloise calendar!
OMG! My Eloise calendar just came and I am speechless! It is the most amazing, cutest, most adorable calendar ever, hands down! I may need the Cliffs Notes for a couple of the fairy tales, though. What is the mermaid one? |

Dog in heat? Jingles is not happy. Do dogs get "emotional" in heat? She just wants to sleep by the fire place or be held. I've never had a dog in heat before so what should I expect for the next 2 - 3 weeks? Current Mood: curious |

I've just finished making dog cake and dog biscuits for my pack's christmas presents. However I'm a bit lost on what to do about icing etc? I figured I would use yoghurt somehow but don't really know how. All the recipes I'm finding online include icing sugar which I would prefer to stay away from/think I should stay away from. Does anyone know anyway I could decorate/frost the cake with yoghurt, or know any good dog frosting recipes? Thanks! |

-_-*
My sister's roommate said that our dog was in heat because she was swollen. Today, we picked her up from her grooming appointment at Petsmart and the groomer told us that she was definitely in heat because she was bleeding while she was at the store. I wanted to spay her before her first heat cycle but now I'll have to wait until January. My previous dog, Osita was spayed at 9 months and we're pretty sure she never went into heat because we would take her to the dog park frequently and no male dogs ever gave her special attention. So, I bought the dog diapers from Petsmart which cost $12.53 for only 12. I find that too expensive. Does anyone know where I can find them for less? I really do NOT want her to get pregnant. I love puppies and they're great but I can't justify letting her have puppies when I see so many stray dogs and dogs that have to be put down because no one will adopt them. My older sister wants her to have puppies but I said NO WAY. She works, goes to school full-time, and doesn't live at home. I go to school full-time and live an hour away during the semester. My mom goes to college, has to take care of the house, my little sister and all her other responsibilities. I got Osita (previous dog) fixed at the Golden State Humane Society in Garden Grove for only $50 so I'll be calling them tomorrow to set up an appointment for mid-January. They are usually very busy so I need to make sure there is some availability. I'll have to make sure I walk her in a remote area and not leave her in the yard unattended. Thankfully I don't have to go back to school until January 25th! Current Mood: not happyCurrent Music: White Christmas - The Drifters |
